TRUSTED AGENTS Trusted to do the right thing, trusted for advice, trusted to achieve the best possible result, trusted with what for most people is their most important asset. It’s easy to say these things but how does one demonstrate this? Having one of the highest repeat and referral businesses is the ultimate social proof for doing what you say. Being the winner of the Harcourts Gold Customer Service Award is recognition from clients for outstanding service, and the fact I consider most of my clients to be friends. It doesn’t matter to me whether it is the sale of your first home or Christchurch’s most luxurious property the service is the same and the result should be brilliant for both. •

In excess of $125 million in settled sales.

Consistently in the Harcourts Top 20 agents.

Winner of the Harcourts Gold Customer Service Award.

What my clients say: “I would like to mention just how impressed we have been with Foss and his approach throughout the whole campaign. Apart from being a genuinely lovely guy he was focused, dedicated, professional, communicated every single detail clearly and his energy and enthusiasm never wavered. I particularly appreciated his understanding of the demands of family life.” Megan & David Powell

CHRISTCHURCH Five years in the making, a new art gallery has opened in Lyttelton’s London Street. Although 50 Works Gallery owner, Ronnie Kelly, bought the dilapidated heritage building prior to the earthquakes, repairs to his Lyttelton family home took precedence and plans to open the gallery were put on the back burner. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art, Ronnie has since worked in London as a designer and illustrator and later working in exhibition management and design in museum and art galleries. Drawing on his experience as programmes manager at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and the Southland Art Gallery and Museum, 50 Works will hold regular exhibitions showcasing both emerging and established New Zealand and international artists. A joint exhibition of Christchurch-based artists, Maryrose Crook and Wilhelmus Ruifrok, whose work explores memory, nostalgia and historical and environmental references, is on now and runs until 31 January. Visit the gallery on Fridays 1-5pm and weekends 10-5pm for a dose of culture.

The couple behind Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar have taken their obsession to the next level with their new restaurant within the newly refurbished heritage building on Poplar Lane. Booths divided by bamboo stakes against a backdrop of red brick create cosy havens to dine on signature dishes like their hot soupy pork and ginger xiaolongbao alongside bites like their delectable open-faced bao “burger” stuffed with free-range pork belly or fried tofu with fresh coriander, cucumber and hoisin sauce. Wash down these Chinese morsels with your favourite tipple and finish with an inspired dessert dumpling Wed-Sun, 11am to late.

Marking the return of arts and culture to the central city after almost five years, the race is on for the long-awaited reopening of the Christchurch Art Gallery on 19 December. At the time of the February quake the Van der Velden: Otira exhibition was in its twelfth day and, as a fitting tribute, the first painting to be hung for the reopening this month is one by John Gibb, which featured in the last show. The gallery foyer will showcase Bill Culbert’s Bebop from the 2013 Venice Biennale and Michael Parekowhai’s highly recognisable sculpture of the bull on the grand piano – On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer.

The echo of hooves belting down the track in far-off Flemington resounded, thanks to modern communication, around the confines of No. 4. Equally as loud were the cheers and whoops of merriment as the Foss Shanahan-Harcourts Melbourne Cup client event almost lifted the roof. With straining sinews and eyes filled with desperate purpose, the thoroughbreds sped to glory, watched around the world wherever racing devotees gather.

Casino Cup Day Breakfast

The cool morning belied the heat that lay in-store later that day, for this was Trotting Cup Day, which requires a good fuelling if one is to cope with it at all. To this end, breakfast was up at the Grand Cafe at Christchurch Casino, where a steady stream of stylish folk filed in. Outfits ranging from the elegant to the outrageous were to be seen as the breakfasters prepared for the fun ahead. Snatches of conversation eavesdropped by this reporter, were of favourites, fashion, hats and horses as all the while plates came full and went away empty. Appetites for food now tamed, those for the thrill of a bet and excitement of a race were only just being whetted as the air became charged with anticipation.

True Grit Grand Opening

Jacqui and Shane Victor

In a city full of holes, it is good to know that at least one has been filled up. The hole in question is the site of the famous Hole in the Wall, which is an empty space no longer. The occupant of the aforementioned void is True Grit, back on the scene to style the heads of the town. The smart new salon blazed back to life with a glamorous grand opening complete with the most enviable array of edible and drinkable goodies imaginable. By the light of the retro industrial lamps which twinkled off the mirrored walls, guests were welcomed by Jacqui and Shane Victor to the new era of hairdressing, which, in a town of dust, is the sprinkling of magic called True Grit.

Fundamental Furnishings

RiveRa ColleCtion FoR Minotti

Furnishing your outdoor areas is just as important as your interiors, and with advancements in technology surging ahead in leaps and bounds, the choice is bigger and better than ever before.

When shopping for outdoor furniture there are four key considerations to bear in mind; size, function, comfort and longevity. Map out the space you have to work within and ascertain what kinds of seating arrangements work best for the area, the number of people who will be using it, and be aware bulky furniture could overwhelm the space. Look to materials that are easy care and will last the distance from one season to the next. The range of materials and textiles on offer – thanks to the considerable

advancements in technology in recent years – means there are more styles, colours and patterns available than ever before to create a connection between indoor and outdoor areas. if you are willing and able to spend top dollar for quality that is designed to last a long time, consider colours and patterns that are timeless, so the materials don’t end up outlasting your interest. Make sure you understand the care and maintenance your chosen type of furniture and upholstery requires to keep it in tip-top condition. To get the

most out of your outdoor areas, furniture needs to be comfortable, otherwise you’ll find yourself retreating indoors before you’ve really had the chance to relax, so wherever possible sit in dining chairs and on loungers and sofas before your make your investment. introducing a few strategically placed planters – some of which can be a sculptural installation in themselves – will soften hard edges and bring your outdoor lounging and entertaining areas to life. If you can’t find just what you’re looking for on the showroom floor

consider approaching an interior design company to custom-make furniture that explicitly reflects your personal style, accommodates your specific requirements to suit your architecture, and fits within your designated outdoor area comfortably. Look to your interior design and style of indoor furniture to guide you towards a similar look for the outdoors. nowadays, weather-resistant coatings on structural materials and textiles can take indoor furniture to the outdoors, creating a more cohesive look between the inside and outside of your home.

The GReAT Renowned for our love of the great outdoors and Canterbury's hot summers, it’s time to think about how we can utilise our backyard to make the most of longer days and nights. Whether it’s a conservatory, courtyard or an open backyard, you can transform it into a second or third living space with all the comfort and intimacy your indoor living areas provide. Fabrics now have quick-dry formulas so that, like interior fabrics, they are extremely tactile with beautiful colours and patterns. This allows us to extend out from our interior and treat our outdoor area as we would in our interior living spaces. In a range of colours, wicker furniture is a popular trend this year. With a selection of modular

configurations from which to choose, it can be a great way to give your outdoor area a pop of colour with the functionality and versatility required for entertaining. Sofas and armchairs layered with cushions and throws, pulled together with rugs, give a cosy intimacy, while cleverly positioned feature lighting can highlight key aspects of the garden; a fabulous way to make your outdoor areas feel just as inviting and dramatic as your interiors.

As New Zealand has a high UV rating it is important to keep sheltered from the sun and the changeable weather conditions here in Canterbury. Portable umbrellas are a convenient and effective way to protect you from the sun, while creating definitive areas outdoors. One of the hottest items for

A prerequisite for the completion of any outdoor space is of course comfortable seating. Due to this international trend of placing a greater emphasis on outdoor living and furniture design, manufacturers have been working hard to produce a wide variety of sun and mould-resistant fabrics, which have the same characteristics as good quality indoor textiles in terms of the variety of styles and colours available. For many years, the familiar brand of outdoor fabric used was sunbrella, a solution-dyed acrylic, which was, and is still, used for awnings, marquees, and upholstery for outdoor furniture. However, within the last couple of years more refined versions of this synthetic, polyester and polyethylene mix have allowed fabric manufacturers to duplicate the characteristics of the natural yarns of cotton and linen for example, in loft and colour range. sunbrella and the like, albeit extremely durable, are rather flat and are typically only available in bright stripes and plain colours. this may be ideal for a recliner and good at masking suntan lotion stains, but has little interest compared to the natural fibre ranges now on the market. the renowned American fabric house Jim thompson has recently released two collections of solution-dyed polypropylene outdoor fabrics, the Fez and No 9 Collections, that are unparalleled with their indoor natural counterparts. their bold ethnic weave and patterns in a vibrant colour palette fit perfectly into an outdoor setting, and are casual, yet full of character, while maintaining a level of sophistication.

Belle interiors Director Colin Foggo says, “Often we are able to adapt product from standard outdoor furniture ranges, but when this is not possible we manufacture the items according to the client’s specific preferences and the requirements of the space.” Colin explains that the arrangement of the furniture must first be addressed. Then, traffic flow between indoor and out, spatial aspects and focal points are taken into account to ensure the furniture is suited to the specific area. Colin refers to this as “exploiting the potential of the space”. Choosing the appropriate materials and treatments, such as quality teak or kwila and galvanised or stainless steel, with water-intolerant foam cushioning all contribute to the durabilty, longevity, style and comfort bespoke pieces offer. “Bulky, to-the-floor styles with heavy arms should be avoided in smaller spaces,” Colin recommends, and says the majority of the seating they manufacture tends to be wooden framed, leggy rather than bulky, raked for comfort and well cushioned to achieve the same comfort as interior seating solutions provide. Dining tabletop surfaces vary from concrete to maxboard (a high-pressure laminated resin)

and slatted timber that can be either oiled or epoxy coated – which Colin says is the most ideal solution. slatted timber on a dark powder-coated metal frame is a stylish option and pairs nicely with lightweight white poly chairs. Most outdoor poly dining chairs contain UV inhibitors to prevent sunlight decay and discolouration, and price is a good indicator of their quality. Quality wooden-framed canvas chairs can be expensive and are heavy, but they look great in a

spacious setting and their weight can be an advantage when the wind picks up. to avoid wood turning silver, regularly treat it with a quality oil or epoxy coating to maintain the timber’s beautiful natural colours. Create the ultimate outdoor paradise at home this summer. Be inspired by the different styles and accessories on show in Christchurch, and experience the quality of esteemed global names in textiles, furniture and omewares, all in your own private oasis.

DIY

ChrIstmas For a simple and truly handcrafted Christmas tree that won't take up half your living room or shed pine needles, try this easy DIY alternative.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED + 10 lengths of tree branch cut to size or graduated lengths of driftwood + 1 ball of brown string + Electric drill + Christmas ornaments and LED fairy lights for decorating

This design works equally well with slender tree branches cut to size, or with found lengths of driftwood for a beach-inspired tree.

Cox & Cox

1 Remove all greenery from the branches and cut into different lengths and arrange on the floor in a triangle, leaving space between each branch to hang decorations from. 2 Drill a hole in each end of each length, about 5cm from either end, to thread the string through. 3 Lay all 10 lengths out on the floor spacing each one equidistant from

the one before. 4 Thread the string through the bottom length of wood, fasten with a knot and continue threading the string up one side and down the other, tying a knot in between each length to hold it in place. At the top leave enough string to allow the tree to be hung by a nail on the wall. 5 Decorate with Christmas ornaments and finish by weaving delicate strands of LED fairy lights around each branch.

GOInG CraCkers

Harking back to the 1840s, Christmas crackers are a great way to personalise your family's festive experience, especially when you make them yourself. In 1847, enamoured with French bonbons, London confectioner Tom Smith began making similar ones with the addition of love notes, short mottos and riddles hidden within the sweet wrappers. When sales of Mr Smith's sweets began to wane, he set about devising new and innovative promotional ideas to increase sales. One evening, whilst sitting in front of his log fire, divine inspiration sparked. Mesmerised by the sparks and crackling sounds coming from the fireplace, he decided it would be fun if his sweets erupted with a crack when the sweet wrappers were torn apart. Over the years, his cracker

business expanded and so did cracker size as he added toys and party hats inside, and travelled the world in search of new ideas of gifts to hide inside them. To this day the traditional cracker comprises four main characteristics; a cracker strip (available at craft stores), decorative paper, a joke, a tiny gift, and a paper hat. Making your own Christmas crackers means you can put your personal stamp on them by customising the style and personalising the contents. Use seasonal giftwrap or crĂŞpe paper, or step outside the box by using wallpaper remnants from an old home improvement project

Store-bought C hrcoistntmaains crackers usually jokes, so less-than-average ur own eit her create yo out punchl ines or seek for inspirational quoteser. people to pond or from your local vintage shop. You will use this material to wrap around a toilet roll, before tying the ends with ribbons. Store-bought Christmas crackers usually contain less-than-average jokes, so either create your own punchlines or opt for something more meaningful by seeking out inspirational quotes from your favourite philosopher that people can keep and ponder well into the new year. Either handwrite or use an old typewriter, or decorative font on the computer, to print your jokes or life quotes. Tiny gifts can be as simple or as extravagant as you like. This could also be a fun way of

distributing Christmas gifts around your assembled friends and family. Simply add a name tag to each cracker or, to make it even more interesting, add a name tag to the gift inside each cracker, so once they're pulled you can have fun giving the contents to the recipient. Gifts can be anything that fits within a toilet roll, like travel-sized skincare products, cosmetics or fragrances, nail polish, jewellery, cufflinks, miniature spirits, luxury chocolates, movie passes, concert tickets or money. Start saving those toilet rolls and collecting supplies, then get rolling, gluing, tying and, voilĂ , meaningful crackers devoid of 'Dad jokes'.

The best gifts of all are the ones that we have spent time thinking about. After all, the adage "It's the thought that counts" is the key here. If you're creatively inclined and are happy to take a little time making your gifts extra special then bespoke wrapping for the individual can be made so unique to the recipient that it will mean much more than the gift itself. In the past I have gone to great lengths to personalise gifts and their presentation, which has been a fulfilling process – allowing me the time to really think about what that person means to me and to enjoy showing them just

how much with a little extra care. One idea I especially love for family members is to dig out old family photos of you and your siblings or perhaps one of your parents as a child sitting on Santa's knee. Scan the image and use it to create a one-of-a-kind Christmas gift card. Another idea I've used in the past with great success, is writing a list of all the things you love and appreciate about your loved ones (either by hand or printed on computer), which you can use to create wrapping paper that is bound to impress!

AfTER Dark Don’t let your home disappear under the cloak of darkness when night falls. Be safe, add magical ambience and showcase architectural and landscaping features with practical and ambient lighting to enjoy your outdoor areas well after the sun sets. Illuminate The Landscape Add drama by spotlighting a tree or other focal point in your garden like a flower bed or water feature. Uplighting provided by spotlights accentuates the texture of tree trunks and creates a beautiful glow on foliage. Inexpensive LED rope lighting creates a great uplighting effect when placed on the back of landscape bed edging. Roll out the tube lighting and pin it in place with landscape staples for a hidden glow. Make sure you position spotlights away from windows or your neighbours.

Wall-mount downlights cast a warm, gentle light on outdoor living spaces. Use them to enhance texture on stone walls. Plan ahead when incorporating a light into a wall, leaving access to wiring for maintenance or repairs. Dining At Dusk Enjoy your deck after dark with well-planned lighting on your porch or deck. Set the scene with strings of fairy lights draped over a pergola or bundled into a ball beneath glass domes to make a luminous table feature. outdoors in the evening. Add an element of the unexpected with a light fixture that’s usually seen indoors, like a chandelier, for example. Life Aquatic There’s nothing quite like a night-time dip in the pool. Add spotlights in and around your pool for safety. Add submerged lighting, using aquatic rated fixtures in ponds to create luminous light to enjoy fish and plants well after the sun goes down. Light The Way Lead guests to the front door with adequate lighting to illuminate

stairs or other potential hazards. The simplest and cheapest lighting option is solar-powered landscape lights which require no wiring, and therefore use no electricity. Simply place them in a sunny spot, and when dusk arrives, they automatically light up. A string of low-voltage LED lighting is the perfect solution for brightening a shady bend along a walkway. It’s a low-cost, easy DIY solution for illuminating a path. Use motion-sensing lights to increase security at night. Install them in key spots like the garage and side doors where it’s useful to have light for short periods.

LYNETTE MCFADDEN

BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS GOLD

With Christmas almost here and holidays getting closer I thought I’d share my thoughts on two very specific entities. Both conjure up uniquely different emotions, so bear with me whilst I elaborate. When I was growing up trolls were something, that lived under bridges and held deep and meaningful conversations with goats. They also provided a humorous touch, hanging off the mirror in your car, much like a charm to amuse and entertain. But not now. Today’s trolls are an entirely different creature. They are much darker in context; in fact, a social media troll by definition is someone who creates conflict (as if the world doesn’t have enough) by posting controversial or inflammatory statements with the sole

intent of producing an emotional-usually angry response from others. ‘Others’ being the target of their comments. These comments often go beyond what would be deemed constructive feedback or debate, and are launched under the protection of anonymity. Every industry has its share of trolls waiting to deliver feedback and mine more than most. I’m often disappointed by the constant commentary relating to how little real estate agents do, how auctions never work and how overpaid everyone is, to name but a few, however I’ve been in the industry for long enough to realise that for me those observations are rare and not the norm. The reality, which a troll wouldn’t care for, is that successful realtors work more hours than anyone - just ask their families and without results, you don’t get paid. It’s so much easier to subscribe to the cliché when talking about real estate, and for every set of great circumstances or examples there’s always some character

whose conduct brings an industry into disrepute. That’s not the standard that I believe in or hold others to. I only wish slightly more balance and perspective would be applied when the whole real estate industry discussion starts. So, onto my second entity – the fat man in the red suit. He’s coming and a number of our recent auction results suggest he may have arrived early for some of our owners. I don’t believe these results are chance or luck alone; skill plays a big part. Finally, I love Christmas. It gives me time with my family. I know for others it can be a stressful, trying and expensive time, but maybe this year it can be kinder. And that’s my Christmas wish. The world has enough trolls, enough bad, hard, black news, so be kinder to yourself and others. Sign off 2015 and may 2016 be special!

With an innate affinity for creating timeless sophistication in New Zealand homes, interior designer, Debbie Cavit, talks to Majka Kaiser about transitional furniture and elegant décor. debbie Cavit has an extensive portfolio of interior work spanning 24 years. It boasts a myriad of high-end commercial and residential projects here at home and around the world, and has given debbie a solid reputation as one of new Zealand's most sought-after interior designers. “Canterbury has fantastic options when it comes to contemporary furniture, but we see a real need for our specialty range of ‘transitional furniture’,” says debbie, who has recently opened a showroom for Cavit & Co on Victoria street. Transitional furniture, debbie explains, has a timeless quality that transcends fickle fashion trends creating a timeless décor of which you will never tire. As debbie takes me through the carefully curated collections on display, it’s clear she has

an intimate connection with each and every one, as she explains the history behind the likes of the ralph Lauren empire and how they came to produce their ubiquitous range of rustic furniture handcrafted by a dutch father and son duo, through to the iconic brand’s modern furniture collections. debbie is drawn to pieces that encapsulate excellent design, timeless elegance, and functionality, which are made with quality materials to the highest standards. during the showroom tour, debbie shares a few insights into a few key trends to watch out for in the coming year. Metallic décor accents remain strong, with bronze at the forefront and gold taking on a greater presence. Colours in textiles are diverse with Kate spade recently launching a new furniture and fabric collection showcasing

bright pop colours, but the theme emerging is definitely favouring a neutral colour palette. ralph Lauren's perennial navy and tan are set against a subdued colour palette of pale grey damasks and wools. LA designer Barbara Barry has a fabulous palette that ranges from neutrals through to warm fig and pond scum greens and blues, while new York's Holly Hunt uses warm neutrals as a backdrop to bold artwork, which contains a fabulous mix of texture and bold colour. Italian bed-linen company, Frette features a dark smoky petrol through to light neutrals and the every popular crisp white and ivory. “While all the design houses have a slightly different take on fashion and colour, natural colour is definitely taking a stronger hold,” debbie muses.

Just as any other room in your home requires planning, so do outdoor spaces. We look at a few areas that bear some careful consideration to achieve a functional, stylish and relaxing backyard retreat this summer.

Outdoor rooms have their own unique challenges. As well as giving thought to architectural style, colour palettes, traffic flow, spatial requirements and comfort, it's important to factor in shelter from the elements and privacy from the next-door neighbours. Important things to consider if you are reinventing your outdoor area from scratch or embarking on a big project are orientation and layout. Exposure to sun and protection from the wind, proximity to the house, pool, and views, and consideration for the kinds of activities to accommodate cooking, dining, entertaining, lounging, and

Brighten your home with decorative glass Splashbacks Bench tops & side

sun bathing, are also essential elements to think about. If you’re contemplating tackling a large-scale project or even if your outdoor area could benefit from some bespoke elements, employ a landscape architect and an interior designer (many of whom have experience designing outdoor areas). Many have the ability to successfully design and manufacture custom-made furniture to suit your specific needs or have access to discounted products that will save you money.By bringing in the professionals, you can rely on their extensive knowledge and experience to design a functional

and beautiful space you will love entertaining and relaxing in. Consider access between indoor preparation areas to outdoor dining areas for optimal practicality. Ideally your outdoor area should be easily accessible from the house, with food preparation areas located near your indoor kitchen to reduce trips back and forth. If this is not a viable option you may want to think about designing a dedicated area outdoors to a combined cooking and dining area. Heating is an additional benefit, which will enable you to enjoy your outdoor areas in comfort for

longer. Investigate the variety of options on the market that best suits your requirements and current set up. Integrate an awning or sun sails to patios adjoining the house or a sturdy multi-directional umbrella for shade over dining and lounge areas. Gazebos and pergolas are standalone structures at the bottom of the garden or beside the pool are a good way to provide respite from the sun and wind. Always work together with your designer or builder to ensure the style of any stand-alone structure is in keeping with the architecture of your home for a cohesive look.

Enjoy your outdoor living areas for longer when the sun begins to set. take the chill off while you dine al fresco on your patio, balcony, or beside the pool with a portable patio heater. Patio heaters come in an array of shapes and sizes and are fuelled in a variety of ways, using gas, propane or electricity. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider before you decide what is right for you. The greatest benefit of using propane is its mobility and ease of use. Propane patio heaters can be set up almost anywhere. they don’t need professional plumbing or installation, and the fuel tank is out of sight, hidden within the unit. While there are no installation costs for propane heaters, this particular fuel does have the highest cost of use. Patio heaters that run on natural gas have a lower cost of operation than any other patio heaters. As they have a constant supply of fuel there is no need to worry about refilling them. However, with all natural gas appliances care must be taken when they are installed and may need to be professionally plumbed.

Electric patio heaters produce zero emissions and have a fuel cost that lies somewhere between propane and natural gas. they may need professional installation depending on the type of voltage and wiring needed. Electric heaters operate efficiently, use fuel economically, and produce heat effectively. Patio heaters have many inbuilt safety features to protect you and your family. Most have a tilt shut-off valve. Be sure to give adequate space between the patio heater and any combustibles. Always consult the manual before installing your patio heater. For patio heaters between 30,000 and 50,000 BtUs, provide at least 75cm of clearance above and on all sides of the reflector and emitter head from combustible materials. Smaller units from 10,000 to 30,000 BtUs need at least 60cm of clearance above and on all sides of the reflector and emitter head.

A Sheltered

LIFE

Summertime is the time to get outdoors and enjoy al-fresco entertaining and lounging with the help of all-important shelter from the heat of the sun.

As we move into summer months and we migrate outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather, it's hard to beat the relaxed atmosphere of dining al fresco, watching our kids playing in the backyard and enjoying a spot of leisurely gardening after the lawns have been freshly mowed. to ensure we get the most out of our outdoor living spaces all summer long in ultimate comfort, a shade structure is vital. the ideal time to consider how shade can be integrated into your outdoor space is at the beginning of the design phase, and there are a number of options to consider when planning a shady retreat

or respite from the heat of the summer sun. louvre roofs are a comparatively recent product to the market that offers excellent control over the levels of shade you receive to your outdoor area. At the touch of a button an automated louvre can both rotate or retract to allow as much sun or shade as you require in the moment. the overhead structure of the louvre blades and frame also create the feeling of a genuine outdoor room. With the blades closed you also have a greater degree of shelter from the rain and additional protection for your outdoor furniture.

All too often timber pergolas have been tacked onto the side of a house with little thought to scale or construction materials. however, with good design a pergola can create fixed shade that compliments the architecture of the home. the shade offered can be determined by the spacing of timber slats on the roof of the pergola frame. the overall effect can be softened by a well-chosen climber that can form a vegetated green roof. Umbrellas can be either permanent or occasional, depending on the how you’ve designed your space. A key to

umbrella selection is first to consider the quality of the product you choose. the old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ applies. top-quality umbrellas will rotate at different angles to ensure shade no matter where the sun is throughout the day. Also consider how your umbrella will handle strong Canterbury nor'-west winds. A well-selected and positioned tree will create dappled or full shade for little cost. Selection is key and you will need to consider if an evergreen or deciduous specimen best suits your needs.

Northlands Mall Big Night Out

Amy Roberts, Rebecca Adams

Big city sounds were heard echoing in Northlands as a tidal wave of humanity invaded the mall and the fun of the Big Night Out swung into action. The main concourse was thronged with shoppers all eager to chase down some pre-Christmas bargains. The chase would be interrupted by the strolling attendants who, with generously stocked platters in hand, provided a pleasant obstacle course for the partygoers. Along the length of the centre, stalls stocked with temptations ranging from food to makeup drew crowds and queues. The entertainers and celebrities on stage had a hard job to compete with the sound of ringing tills as the shopping fest rolled on. Christie Dasler, Sade Mahuika

Summer SkIn Beauty therapist and owner of urban Skin and Body, Ginnie Matson offers these summer skin care tips to protect your skin and keep it radiant all summer long.

SunScreen

There has recently been a lot in the media about the SPF 30 having double the protection of an SPF 15. However, this is a myth, with some experts suggesting that an SPF 30 only offers about 4-7% more protection than an SPF 15. It’s definitely something to think about because as you increase your SPF, the amount of chemicals in the product also increases. I advise using an SPF 15 for this reason and apply a generous amount 30 minutes before leaving the house, reapplying

regularly throughout the day, particularly if you’re in and out of the water. A good rule of thumb is to use a shot glass amount for your body and a tablespoon amount for your face. And remember that relying solely on the SPF in your foundation is not enough to protect your skin.

AdjuSt Your routine

Make sure you double cleanse twice per day to remove sunscreen and to avoid blockages. Sunscreens are designed to adhere to skin and sit on the surface, combine this with warmer temperatures and sweating and cleansing irregularly could lead to breakouts and congestion. You might need to change

THE SPF In YoUR FoUndATIon IS noT EnoUGH To PRoTECT YoUR SkIn. your moisturisers for the warmer temperatures. Lighter, non comedogenic, antioxidant rich moisturisers that lock in moisture and prevent trans epidermal water loss are ideal for summer. Skin conditions like keratosis pillaris (that ‘chicken skin’ on the backs of your arms) and back acne can be more noticeable in the summer time. Try body lotions that contain glycolic or salicylic acid as these will aid with exfoliation and create a smoother skin.

GInnIE’S SUMMER TOP TIPS + Get your lashes and brows tinted so you don’t have to wear as much eye makeup, which is ideal if you are in the water a lot. + For a fabulous faux tan, Vani-T spray tans are excellent. This lovely product produces a nutty brown colour and it will never make you look orange. + If you like some colour in your SPF try the Makeup Me BB Cream SPF 30 that has a lovely dewy finish with just a hint of colour. + If you do get sun burnt, you can’t beat aloe vera or try La Clinica Cooling Relief Gel to soothe inflamed, red skin and minimise peeling.

Better Living Made Simple Balance, relaxation and a sense of peace are not just for those who can afford housekeepers, luxury holidays, or those without kids. Local health and wellness coach, Annabelle Matson offers some simple and easy ways to achieve the good life that don’t cost time or money.

1. Do Your Research I’m finding I can score some better deals on speciality health food items I can purchase online. Save money and value time by doing a quick Google search to see what you can get delivered. 2. Shop Your Pantry First Have a good look through your pantry and fridge before heading out to do your shopping. This will help you avoid doubling up on items and will allow you to see what you can throw together with the ingredients you have on hand. 3. Create A Meal Framework Have a rough idea of how your meals will play out for the week ahead. This helps to guide your shopping list, avoids food waste and helps you see where you can further reduce time and money by repurposing dinners for other meals. 4. Do Your Preparation On a Sunday and Wednesday night, I like to prepare healthy staples. This takes about 30 minutes to an hour. I make things like muffins, banana bread, protein balls, nut balls, muesli, hummus, and smoothie bags to pop in the freezer. When you take a small amount of time to do this

in advance, you start the week feeling super organised and it goes a long way to helping you stick with healthy habits when things get hectic during the week. 5. Love Leftovers Cooking more than you need for a couple of meals each week means you get two meals for the effort of one. Add core elements of a dinner dish to other grains or vegetables to give them another life. Try adding your leftover quinoa salad to nori sheets for a quick sushi fix or mix leftover beans with a fresh green salad. Use leftover vegetables to make a quick frittata for lunch, or omelette for breakfast. 6. Make Your Own Making up your own version of store-bought items like hummus, sauces, pesto, dressings, smoothies, soups, and pizza bases is a great way to not only save money, but also be sure you are eating all natural ingredients. 7. Become A Part-time Vegetarian The cost of meat can add up if you are eating it every day and even more so if you eat organic meat. Go part-time vegetarian and make at least three evening

St AlbAnS PhArmAcy Edgeware Village

meals a week meat-free. 8. Analyse Where Your Money Is Going Are you someone who buys a coffee every morning? Or perhaps you spend $10-$15 on lunch every other day? Do you go out for breakfast and spend $18 on poached eggs on toast? If things are tight, look for ways to make your own or cut back on unnecessary spending and reduce the amount you eat out. 9. Cut Back On Booze If you drink a couple of glasses of wine a night, this easily adds up. If you aren’t already, aim to drink only on special occasions, like a dinner out with friends on the weekend, rather than making it part of your evening routine. Not only can you spend the money saved on buying better ingredients you will notice a huge improvement in your overall health and wellbeing. 10. Organic Selection Organic fruit and vegetables aren’t as expensive as you might think, but if organic food isn’t possible for you at the moment, then simply go back to basics. Aim to make your diet all about whole, real food, like fruits, vegetables, legumes,

beans and whole grains, and ditch processed foods. 11. Buy In Bulk While the initial outlay of money might seem expensive, you will save a lot in the long term when you break down the cost per serve, particularly for foods which form the basis of lots of recipes, like nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and grains 12. Local Food Co-Op There are community co-ops operating everywhere – find them on Facebook, online or in your local paper. You can often purchase organic fruit and veges at really good prices. If you want to save even more, get a group of friends or family together and order larger wholesale orders. 13. Shop At Farmers' Markets Buying direct from the farmer means you get to speak to the person who has grown the food you eat, while supporting local producers, and even learn new ways to cook it. Annabelle is a passionate advocate for a holistic philosophy to health and wellbeing. Access a range of free health and wellbeing resources or book a private coaching session at www.annabellematson.com.

Fertile Ground Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, How to Grow an Addict is a highly engaging coming-of-age story about a young woman’s decent into addiction and her struggle for redemption. By the time my eighteenth day at the Facility rolled around I’d written fifteen pages about the things I’d done and things that had happened to me, and I still hadn’t figured out what my three worst were. Nor had I fully recovered from my injuries. The bruise that covered my right thigh was still purple, the stitches over my eyebrow hadn’t completely dissolved, and the yellowish-green bruise around my eyes hadn’t disappeared, either. I’d gotten tired of asking the nurse if I could have something for the pain, because every time I did she’d say, “Oh no, ya know, some people will take any type of pill just to be taking something. They get relief from the process of popping something in their mouth. So let’s not help that part of you, okay?” Instead she’d offer me wheat bags or hot towels with lavender oil on them. “You’re gonna feel better just as soon as it stops hurting,” she said one day, a half smile, half smirk on her face. She made me feel like I was a five-year-old with a pretend stubbed toe asking for morphine. I hated her. But I needed something to make me feel better and the hot towels did help, so I kept going to her office and I kept listening to her talk about living one day at a time and staying away from the first drink, “Or in your case, the first pill.” They didn’t talk too much about pills in the Facility, but they did talk a lot about alcohol. Unlike most of the others at the Facility, I didn’t get smashed every time I drank. And I told everyone who’d listen that I liked pills more than I liked booze, but no one seemed to care, and the staff continued to refer to me as an alcoholic, which continued to piss me off. The few times things got out of hand with me and booze was only because I’d lost count of how many drinks I’d had, or because I’d forgotten to eat. The really crazy episodes I’d experienced had all happened because I’d mixed booze with pills. It was the combination that wiped me out, and I

had spent years trying to figure out how much I could drink with tranquilizers or painkillers and still stay standing. Sometimes it only took one or two beers to tip me over, and other times I could drink eight beers and still be the best driver in town. And there were many times when I could have gotten legless on free booze from the Hangout but I didn’t because I wasn’t interested or because I had a good high going on from something else. It seemed to me that a real alcoholic wouldn’t turn down a drink for any reason. The more I listened to the other clients at the Facility, the more I was convinced I wasn’t like them and shouldn’t be there. They all had DUIs, and some of them had been in jail more than three times. On day nineteen, I decided I was going to tell my therapist that I was leaving. I was planning to tell her at the beginning of the Monday morning group session, before she had a chance to start asking her usual questions: “Do you feel like using today? Have you thought about what’s right today instead of what’s wrong?” My plans went sideways when she walked into group and didn’t ask any questions; instead, she just started talking. “Untreated addiction of any type gets worse, never better . . . ever, ever, ever!” she said. “And that’s true whether you’re currently using or not. If you don’t get honest about your relationship with drugs and alcohol, you’ll likely die from this disease, or from an accident brought about by using or pursuing. In fact, statistics say that of the eight of you in this room today, only two of you will get and stay sober and clean. The rest of you will leave here, decide you know what’s best, and use again. But for the two of you who’ve had enough of being sick and tired, I’m here to help you. So, who are you?” No one said a thing or moved a muscle. The silence became painful, so I put my hand up. “I don’t think I’m an alcoholic and I don’t buy the story of it being a disease,” I said as quickly as I could, then

I dIdn’t want to be that person anymore, so I decIded to pay more attentIon to what my therapIst saId, especIally about fIxIng broken relatIonshIps and not beatIng myself up for every mIstake I’d ever make.

wiped the sweat from my top lip. She smiled, lips spread tight, not showing any teeth. “Alcoholism doesn’t care what you believe. It doesn’t care if you’re convinced you’ve got it or not. It doesn’t care where you come from, who you are, what you look like, or what you own. It only cares about being fed. And if you continue to drink, it’ll continue to whip you around and drag you down, and that will happen regardless of what you believe about it. I promise.” When it was my turn in group the next day to read through the list of friends I used to have, and the reasons they weren’t my friends any longer, everyone, including my therapist, thought it was a pretty long list for someone so young. It made me cry, and I wasn’t used to crying in front of people. It also got me thinking about other people I’d lied to, stolen from, and caused trouble for. I didn’t want to be that person anymore, so I decided to pay more attention to what my therapist said from then on, especially about fixing broken relationships and not beating myself up for every mistake I’d ever make. By day twenty-one I could feel that something inside of me was changing, though I couldn’t explain what, exactly. It felt like I had a word on the tip of my tongue but couldn’t say it. Twenty-two days into my stay at the Facility, and things were going pretty well – until Josh snuck out and lay down on a railroad track about a mile away. We were all upset the next day, and no one knew what to say or do. That day the therapist took her usual seat, blew her nose and wiped her eyes, and said, “I’m really sorry about Josh. Sorry I didn’t see it coming, and sorry for

his family. I sometimes wish I had an easier job, because you guys are heartbreakers.” “I saw it coming,” said Sam, the guy who’d arrived at the Facility three days after me. “Josh’s wife wouldn’t bring his kids to visit and she wouldn’t answer his phone calls. I think he tried to call her fifty times yesterday,” he said. “Be snitches, you guys. It doesn’t count in here. Tell me if you’re worried about someone. I’m here to help, ya know. If you want to get well, I’ll do anything I can to help you, but be warned, it’s probably going to get harder before it gets easier, and there’s no way to go over it, under it, or around it. You have to go through it.” I looked around the room. Everyone was crying. “It’s just another day in the world of bad news,” Sam said, sighing. The therapist passed me a box of tissues and, in a softer voice, said to us, “I wish it was the bad news, but it’s just a small piece. The really bad news is that you guys have no experience dealing with problems without booze and drugs. Unless you get some new skills, you’re vulnerable and likely to use again. Everything we try to teach you here is designed to help you retrain your brain, create a new internal voice. One that doesn’t insist that you get shit faced before going to a family dinner or drunk because you’re paralyzed over the fact that you’ve gained a few pounds or lost your favourite lighter. Wouldn’t it be nice to live with a head that wants you to be happy instead of miserable?” I heard myself say “yes,” and I must have said it pretty loud because everyone looked right at me.

One night JUST ISN’T ENOUgH Just a short 45-minute drive from Christchurch, Silo Stay Accommodation at Little River brings a new ‘quirky’ meaning to rural accommodation. Who would have thought that sleeping in a silo could prove to be such a relaxing and memorable experience. Creative in design, inside the silo the space has been cleverly architecturally designed to maximise the fully functional use of space. Ecofriendly and fully insulated, it is an all-year-round destination. With all the creature comforts of home at your fingertips, these luxurious, industrial-chic designed silo apartments are fully serviced. The 4+ Star Qualmark accommodation rating is reflected in the high standard finish and attention to detail that greets you as you walk through the door. The first floor features a curved kitchenette, complete with a toolbox cabinet, a casual

seating area, toilet and external balcony. The sculptured staircase leads to the upper level bedroom with bathroom and balcony. The balcony views overlook local farmland scattered with birdlife, such as wood pigeons and fantails that add further music to the magical experience. The bedroom provides a ‘haven’ of intimacy, where you can close the world off. There is a wall-mounted TV & DVD, but it is the bed that is the main feature of the room with its LED lighting and multi-functional music headboard that utilises a car stereo. Adjacent to the bed, the bathroom is an industrial delight of piping, rustic, raw, earthy tap ware and glass. The upper level includes an additional balcony, but the real appeal of this area is the roof skylight where you can lie in bed gazing at the starry night sky, and be greeted by the soft gentle morning sunlight.

The units are ideally suited to couples and individuals. There is also an Accessible Silo (ground level), which enables wheelchair access and caters for up to 2 adults and 2 children. From $170 per night bookings can be made online at www.silostay.kiwi.nz or PH: 03 325 1977.

SHINING BRIGHT No fragile flower, Christchurch songstress Asti-Loren Newman may have the voice of a lark, but she also has the nouse to make it to the big time. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JO GRAMS

ith her hourglass figure, feline eyes, flowing dark waves and porcelain complexion, Asti-Loren Newman looks every inch the pop princess destined for stardom. Behind the flawless image that graces her self-made psychedelic pop videos, there is a fortitude and determination that belies her youth. Enthralled by the 1980s movie, Fame, and mesmerised by life in the performing arts, Asti set about making her dream become reality. After narrowing a long list of top international performing arts schools down to just five, she picked London’s Susi Earnshaw Theatre School out of a hat, and unbeknownst to anyone – even her mother – the tenacious Christchurch teenager swiftly sent an audition tape off in the mail. Two weeks later, Asti received the life-changing phone call from London offering her a place on a two-year programme. She was just 14 when she left her friends and family behind to take her first furtive steps out into the world, half a world away. As it turns out, Asti’s reallife experience of the London performing arts school was every bit as exciting as she’d anticipated and played out like scenes from Fame. “There was definitely a massive buzz in the halls and people would literally break out into song and dance in the middle of the quad!” Asti recounts. Following in the formidable footsteps of past pupils – like Amy Winehouse and Adele – whose glossy framed photographs lined the walls of the foyer, was a daily inspiration to Asti. Spending three days a week attending a range of performing arts classes that included tap, jazz, ballet and street dancing, musical theatre, expressive arts, business studies, pop and jazz singing, and drama, the remaining two days of the week were spent working towards her GCSEs. Taught by some of the leading lights in the industry, Asti amassed a valuable arsenal of tools that are bound to serve her well wherever

her creative pursuits may take her. Since graduating from theatre school Asti has been talentspotted by Downtown Artists, who nurture young, unsigned singers and songwriters, guiding them and arming them with the necessary skills and mass exposure in the hopes of landing them a fixed record contract. The management agency is home to three recording studios. Formerly known as the illustrious Berwick Street Studios, a long list of renowned bands and singers from the likes of David Bowie, Ringo Starr, Depeche Mode, Björk, PM Dawn and The Chemical Brothers, have borne many chart-topping albums. Working closely with Downtown’s in-house record producers and technicians, this is where Asti recorded her debut album, which tells a coming-of-age tale about a teenage girl transitioning out of the darkness into the light. All nine songs on the album are originals and involve a lengthy process from conception to completion. As Asti explains, the process for her begins by creating an inspiration board made up of images and words, where key themes begin to emerge from which Asti creates a list of working song titles that she eventually narrowed down to nine tracks that all flow and fit well together. From the titles Asti then begins writing the lyrics for each song, line by line. The first five songs were written in long coffee sessions at cafés around London, but by the time she reached the second half of the album dreaded writer’s block struck. “I had just finished song number five when I became a bit stuck. I knew the song titles and the general direction, but I began to overthink how each song had to be different from the one before it and not just follow the usual love story of girl meets boy. “Then my producer started sending me simple tracks and beats to inspire the lyrics, and from then on the rest of the album was easy.” Once the lyrics are written Asti then gets together with theww

Becoming a pop star takes much more than just a good voice and a pretty face; it takes tenacity and perseverance, qualities Asti seems to have in abundance. producer in the studio where the music making begins. Starting with four basic chords as a foundation they then begin to add more musical layers with bass, drums, and other instrumentation. “I often use vivid descriptions to convey to Chris how I want certain parts to sound, like 'I want people to taste blue candy floss when they hear this.' Half the time Chris thought I was on another planet,” Asti laughs, “but we got over that and very quickly he began to understand the way I see music, through colours, tastes, memories and dreams.”

Recently released her debut single, Follow Me, Asti returns home to Christchurch for the New Zealand summer, where she will perform songs from her debut album that is due for release early next year. See Asti perform live at grounds of her former school Selwyn House for a one-off concert on December 5, as well as at a number of Christchurch hotspots, including The Wunderbar and Dux Live, over the month. Who knows what the future will bring for this young starlet, but we have no doubt it will be a bright one.

It was Guy Fawke’s night, but the fireworks were about to start not in the Christchurch evening sky but on the silver screen. Sparks were already beginning to blaze in the champagne glasses as guests filed into Baretta. Elegantly draped ladies and tuxedoed gents mingled, eyes meeting and small talk flowing, the air light and sophisticated. The premier of Spectre, the latest adventure of James Bond, was due to romp across the city as the world’s most famous and well-known secret agent prepared to do battle with the forces of villainy. All of which begs the question, how can an agent be secret when he is so well known to all? This reporter shall have to sit back and contemplate that puzzlement, aided by a very large, very cold vodka martini, shaken, of course, and definitely not stirred.

cutters like hearts and stars. 8. Place the pieces onto a non-stick mat, allow to dry overnight or for about 12 hours. 9. Bake until blonde in colour. 10. Once cookies have cooled either dust with icing sugar or pipe white icing in decorative patterns.

Method

Cocktail of the Month is brought to you by Stealth Hospitality, the company behind King of Snake, Chinwag, Mexicanos and The Dirty Land.

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Warm together the egg, kirsch and icing sugar then whisk/whip up in a machine for around 5 minutes. 3. Sieve the flour and cornflour and the aniseed. 4. By hand, with a spatula, gently mix together the egg mix and the flour. 5. Rest the mixture for approximately 15 minutes. 6. For a traditional look, roll into cylinders about the size of a 10 cent coin and then cut 6cm lengths. Make approximately 4 incisions in the 6cm lengths and bend to form a crescent. 7. For an easier option roll the dough into a cylinder of about a 50 cent coin and then cut pieces to approximately 2cm thick, or use an assortment of Christmas-themed cookie

Sea Breeze New Brighton Club is a social hub where locals and members can come together any day of the week to enjoy good food and great company. WORDS BY MAJKA KAISER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CENTURI CHAN There couldn’t have been a more idyllic evening to enjoy a meal overlooking the cascading waves breaking on New Brighton’s shoreline. Children still frolicked under the watchful gaze of Brighton’s iconic whale in the paddling pool and after-work surfers rode the white caps in the ocean beyond. Seated at a table for two in New Brighton Club’s Pier View restaurant, we take a moment’s silence to revel in the spectacular view and peruse the menu. Starters include the usual favourites like hot buttery garlic bread, ciabatta with a range of dips, spreads and chicken liver

pâté, creamy seafood chowder, garlic prawns, and pulled pork and ginger spring rolls with an asian salad. For the ‘Main event’ there are a range of choices, including dishes for vegetarians and gluten-free options. Caesar salad, chicken and bacon fettuccini with baby spinach and parmesan, roasted eggplant rolls filled with pumpkin, spinach, ricotta and roasted peppers, fresh fish of the day, rosemary roasted lamb shoulder with root vegetables, slowroasted pork belly served with kumara mash, roast beets and garlic beans, beer-battered fish and chips, a cashew-crusted

chicken breast with hand-cut kumara fries, and a choice of chicken or beef rib eye or sirloin steak from the grill. We opt for the two latter dishes, which hit the spot and share an ice cream sundae to end on a sweet note. Downstairs the bistro and club rooms are heaving on a Friday night with members enjoying a pint or two over a game of pool or while watching a game of rugby on the big screen. annual membership is only $26 and includes access to all the club’s amenities – including live entertainment and social and sporting activities held

throughout the year. Indoor activities range from billiards, pool and darts to indoor bowls for men and women and wine tastings, which are held at the club on the first Tuesday of each month and include an annual Christmas function. Outdoor sports include organised fishing trips to Kaikoura, akaroa, Moeraki, Lake Coleridge and Lake Brunner, motor sport, longboarding and Sunday cricket tournaments. BRICk BY BRICk With a new chef at the helm of Cashmere’s favourite suburban pub, The Brickworks offers an all-new fine-dining experience that is bound to satisfy. WORDS BY MAJKA KAISER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CENTURI CHAN Eager to experience a sneak preview of The Brickworks’ revamped menu, we are treated to an all-new seasonal selection of dishes that have been created just in time for summer. From the beginning of December The Brickworks ups the ante with a wide range of tempting dishes. Using the freshest local produce wherever possible, the new menu offers a selection of delicious bar snacks that feature unexpected taste-bud tantalisers such as beer-battered fries, alongside popular favourites like crispy potato wedges, toasted Turkish breads and dips, and mini garlic loaves. Light meals promise a good choice, including a hearty Brickworks burger, Caesar salad, chicken schnitzel and fish ’n’ chips. For the main affair for lunch or dinner, the typical Italian spaghetti dish is made with fresh

prawns in a marmalade chilli, and braised pork belly with red cabbage, potato dauphinoise in a roast tomato jus. We begin with a rich duck liver pâté served with water crackers, toasted Turkish bread, accompanied by cornichons, home-made chutney and grapes to appease our hunger pangs and toast with a glass of New Zealand’s finest vino to the welcome approach of the weekend. The pan-seared salmon fillet is both succulent and beautifully accompanied by seasonal baby vegetables in a salsa verde, and the grain-fed beef fillet is complimented by a ratatouille in red wine jus and truffle oil with a side of creamy sweet potato mash, topped with a wafer-thin prosciutto slice. The final dénouement to our dinner is a delightful deconstructed summery raspberry

panna cotta paired with a delicious pistachio praline, white chocolate and cream, and an irresistible vanilla cheesecake served with mixed berry compote, hokey pokey ice cream, and a melt-in-the-mouth meringue. Young families are welcome and children twelve and under have their own special menu and are easily entertained with the supply of colouring books and coloured pencils. Enjoy after-work drinks indoors while watching live sport on the big screen in the bar area or get together with family and friends over lunch or dinner. On hot summer evenings and lazy afternoons enjoy dining al fresco within their sheltered brick-walled courtyard and its tranquil river view. Christmas gatherings are happily accommodated and bookings are now being taken for Christmas Day lunch.

Otahuna was built by Sir Heaton Rhodes in 1895 as a wedding present for his wife. A beautiful private park 2 copies was developed, with rare plant to give varieties, formal landscaping, kitchen away gardens and fields of daffodils. Rich in personality and anecdote, For the Love of a Place: The Stories and Cuisine of Otahuna, by Hall Cannon, Mikes Refo and Simon Farrell-Green, charts the history of the house and the people who made it, and its rebirth as one of the country’s most welcoming luxury lodges. Ferrari Esperienza Cocktail Evening

The stallions of Italian motoring reared up in salute to welcome guests at Clearwater Resort. With their metal hearts restrained for the evening, the cream of Europe's luxury automotive stable were the objects of admiration and desire. If cars have egos, then these would be swollen from the diet of compliments which they were fed. Whilst their aesthetic appetites were nourished by the Latin dream machines, the devotees's earthly ones were slaked by a truly indulgent array of dishes, the over-riding flavour of the evening being one of unashamed class.

Ross Kiddie Motoring Editor

A California T tugs at Ross Kiddie’s senses. When publisher of Style magazine Charlotte Smulders approached me in the newsroom and said: “Would you like to drive a Ferrari?’’ i didn’t have any hesitation in replying: “Yes, please.’’ New Zealand’s only new Ferrari dealership Continental Cars recently brought the Ferrari esperienza to Clearwater resort. as its name suggests, the experience provides Canterbury’s Ferrari owners, and potential buyers, the opportunity to drive, on familiar roads, the latest and greatest from the stable of the prancing horse. Out of around 10 demonstrator models, i was assigned a beautiful blue

BehiNd The COMPlexiTY OF The CONTrOl SYSTeMS, The CaliFOrNia T iS aN eaSY Car TO driVe California T, a four-seater convertible powered by a 4-litre V8 engine. When you look at the engine statistics of the California T you get a fairly good understanding as to its performance. it is rated with 412kw of power and a staggering 755Nm of torque. The quad-camshaft, 32-valve unit is fed by two turbochargers with drive channelled to the rear wheels through a formula onetype direct shift gearbox. in fact, it’s easy to imagine you are sitting in a formula one car; the steering wheel is multi-functional, there are a raft of systems which can be manipulated from it, such as traction control settings,

suspension and damper controls and, the most important button of all, the source of ignition. and when it is pressed, all hell breaks loose. The big V8 fires into life with a loud bark and constant burble. it’s enough to bring joy to the senses, and even for a senior whose hearing has taken a battering over the years from internal combustion engines, I had no difficulty hearing the engine howl as the revs built. in fact, driving a Ferrari is as much about the sound as it is the performance, even though Ferrari’s V12 engines have long been regarded as the epitome of enticement, the V8 doesn’t disappoint. Behind the complexity of the control systems, the California T is an easy car to drive, the gearbox is effectively an automatic, you just flick the steering wheel-mounted paddles and off you go, the engine wailing and crackling out the exhaust as the revs build. To familiarise myself with the California T’s characteristics i left Clearwater and headed north up the motorway before heading inland. My allocated time in the car was only 50min, but that was long enough for me to eke out some challenging twists of a North Canterbury back road.

The California T fills the driver with confidence, it turns sharply through the steering and corners controlled and flat. Power delivery is immense, and i was circumspect about applying too much throttle early. i didn’t want to put a half-amillion-dollar car into a ditch, or fence, but I was confident that if I did break traction at the rear, the eCS system would compensate. acceleration is stunning, but the California T doesn’t create a lot sensation as speed builds. Yes, the engine does howl and the exhaust booms, but the legal limit comes and goes in a flash – well, according to Ferrari, it will blast to 100km/h from a standstill in 3.6sec, and will top end at 316km/h. These times place it as one of the quickest cars i’ve driven. it also has the most prestige and for a car that is so capable it is also practical for a convertible, it’s a lot more than a 2+2. On the subject of open-air motoring, the hard-top roof retracts electrically. in terms of affordability, the California T is an adventure into one of the world’s most desirable performance brands. i can’t wait for a call to ask if i’d like to drive one on my home patch for a weekend!

Starship Diamonds and Stars High Tea

Elizabeth Button, Jo Grams

The gentlest of breezes lazily progressed around the trees and through the open windows of the Hagley Pavilion, cooling the scene. An elegant and oh-so-English high tea was afoot, guests now gathering. Flutes of Mumm Champagne, sparkling like liquid fireworks were dispensed as cheery chat and laughter filled the hall of delightfully white, dressed tables. This was the inaugural fundraising high tea for the Starship Foundation to support the children of New Zealand during times of their greatest need. Resembling an episode from a fine British play, the genteel party unfolded with tiered plates and trays laden with traditional fare. Flowing more freely than the comestibles was the generosity, as the event and auctions, both live and silent pulled in $91,400 for the Starship National Air Ambulance. Amazing what can be achieved at tea time!
